Obituary

of Lysander Gee

Lysander Gee, son of Solomon Gee and Sarah Watson Crane, was born September 1, 1818 at Austinburg, Ohio.  He married Amanda M. Sagers September 5, 1838 at Far West Missouri.  One child, Orlando, was born to this union February 12, 1846 at Nauvoo.  He married Theresa Bowley who was the mother of eleven children.  They endured all the persecutions that were heaped upon the saints at Far West and at Nauvoo, but through it all there was no question of their loyalty and devotion to the Church.  The first wife died October 22, 1848 in St. Louis.  This left the care of her son to the second wife.  The family came to Utah in the George A. Smith Company.  During this journey Lysander served as a captain of 10 in the fourth company arriving in Salt Lake City October 27 1849.

Lysander married Maryetta Rowe February 10, 1850 in Salt Lake City.  To this union nine children were born, making twenty-one in Lysander Gee’s family.  They built a home in Tooele, which still stands and is in good condition (1940), as Lysander was a carpenter of ability.

Brother Gee was always active in church work.  He was one of the presidents of the Thirty-first Quorum of Seventies; was a high priest in the Tooele Stake and served as superintendent of Sunday school.  He was also active in civic affairs of the community, was educated as a lawyer, acted as justice of the peace and served as a prosecuting attorney.

His death occurred June 27, 1894 at Tooele.
